Sensor ODM OEM is the path many equipment makers take to keep sensing capability in their own hands. Off-the-shelf parts can't solve structural fit; self-development lacks a team; ODM/OEM becomes the efficient compromise.
01 Difference Between ODM and OEM
OEM contract-manufactures to your drawings; ODM also wraps the design. Startups often start with ODM; mature makers often shift to OEM to control cost. We've taken many customers from ODM to volume, then in year two they take the drawings in-house and seamlessly switch to OEM. Some take a middle path: self-develop the core algorithm, ODM the structural parts to us. When defining ODM scope, put algorithm, structure, and firmware into the SOW to avoid later disputes. Also, keep the volume site and prototype site the same—switching factories usually means re-running validation, a hidden cost often underestimated. We prefer to walk the customer through first-volume production before handover.
02 Custom Development Flow
• Duty research and spec definition
• Principle verification and prototype
• Small-batch trial and calibration
• Volume ramp
We originate from East China University AI Lab and deliver algorithm and hardware together—not just a board, but a deployable sensing solution. The prototype stage most fears frequent spec changes; each change re-runs validation and stretches the schedule. In the small-batch trial stage, build the test fixture too, or volume gets stuck at testing.
03 Pitfalls of Volume Delivery
Yield relies on automated calibration, not manual work. For data traceability see 《工业互联数据采集与实时处理》; every sensor ships with its calibration curve archived so after-sales can trace back. For device selection also see 《MEMS传感器技术与发展趋势》, using mature devices to cut risk. Calibration data on-chain enables both traceability and batch quality analysis—a hard requirement for automotive-grade customers. Each batch keeps samples for accelerated life testing; the data feeds the next design, a positive loop.
04 Linking to Intelligent Solutions
Custom sensors can pre-install the edge AI computing module, shipping with inference built in—plug in on site and it judges anomalies. See 《智能传感器技术在智能制造中的应用》 for the whole picture, including how to connect custom parts into an existing line without changing control logic. Customers with pre-installed modules report half the on-site debugging time, since the algorithm is ready.
05 Cost Structure
ODM costs more upfront but saves time; OEM amortizes at volume. The real saving is in calibration yield—every point yield drops doubles after-sales cost, so we invest heaviest in calibration automation. We once reckoned for a customer: lifting yield from 90% to 95% saved enough after-sales in a year to open another line. With controllable delivery cycles, customers take big orders more confidently; the business-side gain often outweighs the saved after-sales.

Q: How much time does ODM save over self-development?
A: Usually saves over half a year of low-level validation, going straight to prototype.
Q: Can small batches be done?
A: Yes, we support elastic capacity from dozens to hundreds of thousands of units.
Q: Who owns the IP?
A: ODM can be agreed to the customer; specifics per development agreement.
